A man who died in a fiery crash in Mountain View early Sunday morning has been identified as 24-year-old Luis Sanchez-Contreras, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Sanchez-Contreras died shortly after the crash around 2:35 a.m. on West Middlefield Road.

He was traveling east in the 800 block of West Middlefield Road when his 2001 Volvo S80 veered into the center median and struck numerous trees. His car and a tree were found engulfed in flames.

Mountain View police officers were not able to get Sanchez-Contreras out of the car before the fire department’s arrival due to the condition of the vehicle, tree debris on top of the car and the fire. He was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Police said Sanchez-Contreras may have been speeding.
