Falcon naming contest results announced as third chick dies

The winning names for San Jose celebrity falcons Clara and Esteban Colbert’s offspring were announced tonight.

The results came amid some sad news; one of the three baby falcon chicks died for unknown reasons this morning.

The falcon chicks were born last month on a ledge atop San Jose City Hall. This is Clara’s fourth nesting season at City Hall and her second with mate Esteban Colbert. There were initially four chicks; one died shortly after it was born.

The chick that died this morning was known by fans as “Little Boy Blue,” said Michelle McGurk, spokeswoman for Mayor Chuck Reed.

The city held a contest in which local schoolchildren submitted suggestions to name the young falcons. The public was allowed to vote on the top submissions online, and voting ended at 5 p.m. today.

The winning name for the female falcon is “Maya,” submitted by Megan, a first-grader at Forest Hill Elementary School.

The male name that got the most votes is “Kekoa,” submitted by Tiffany, a sophomore at Independence High School.

More than 1,600 people participated in the online poll.

The FalconCam, a live streaming video of the falcons’ nest, can be viewed on the city’s website at http://www.sanjoseca.gov.
