A 25-year-old inmate who was in custody in a Salinas jail on child endangerment and kidnapping charges took his own life early this morning, according to the Monterey County coroner’s office.
The inmate, whose name is not being released until his family is notified of the d eath, hung himself from a fixture in his single cell using his T-shirt, sheriff’s Cmdr. Lisa Nash said.
His body, along with a suicide note dictating the distribution of his property, was found around 3:05 a.m.
Medical personnel tried to revive him but were unsuccessful, Nash said.
Deputies who had seen the man an hour earlier during a welfare check said he did not appear to be in distress.
The man was arrested Tuesday on charges of child endangerment, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. He had previously been arrested on domestic violence charges, Nash said.
The sheriff’s office and district attorney’s office are investigating the case.
