An 18-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning after his car crashed into a tree in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at about 3 a.m. on eastbound Montague Expressway, just east of Lafayette Street, according to the CHP.
The man was driving a white GMC Yukon SUV and appeared to be speeding, CHP officials said. The SUV struck a large tree on the south side of the roadway, causing it to rotate in a clockwise direction and the left front door to collide with a second tree.
The victim was severely injured and was extricated because the SUV was badly damaged, CHP officials said. He was the driver of the car and the only occupant.
The victim was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officers have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
At the time, the roadway was wet from recent rain, according to the CHP.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact CHP Officer Toland at (408) 467-5400.
