Man sentenced to 16 years in prison for gang shooting that injured young girl

A Salinas man was sentenced to 16 years in state prison on Friday for a 2007 gang shooting that seriously injured an 8-year-old girl, Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo announced.

Abraham Cabrera, 22, was convicted of a Jan. 14, 2007, drive-by shooting in East Salinas, Flippo said.

According to prosecutors, Cabrera leaned out the window of a passing car and fired at least five rounds into another car carrying a group of teenagers and the young girl.

The girl was struck in the abdomen and survived.

Cabrera has been in custody since February 2007.

The only witness to identify Cabrera was shot at by Cabrera’s brother, Juan, shortly after Cabrera’s arrest, according to prosecutors. Juan Cabrera is serving a prison term for that shooting.

In January, Abraham Cabrera pleaded no contest to attempted murder as well as to charges related to possessing marijuana for sale, according to Flippo.
