A second person who was caught in a riptide and drowned at a Carmel beach on Saturday has been identified as 31-year-old Nalini Kommineni, according to the Monterey County coroner’s office.
Kommineni was one of three people who William Walker, a 48-year-old San Jose resident, tried to save at Monastery Beach in Carmel before he was injured himself, sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Richards said.
Walker died from his injuries Saturday night at a hospital. Kommineni, a resident of Cupertino, died on Monday. The cause of both deaths was deemed accidental drowning.
Walker and Kommineni were among seven people pulled out of a dangerous riptide by Monterey County rescue officials.
Of the seven, three required CPR and four were transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Two people were also transported to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, according to Cal Fire.
