A 56-year-old Tracy man and his 80-year-old mother died when he apparently suffered a heart attack, lost consciousness and crashed his Dodge pickup into a telephone pole in Livermore Sunday afternoon, police said.

The crash was reported at Olivina Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

Police said George Apostol was driving with his mother and sister next to him when he lost consciousness, drifted into the opposite traffic lane, sideswiped a parked car and then crashed into a telephone pole in front of 917 Olivina Ave.

Apostol’s mother, Gloria, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to Eden Hospital. The Livermore resident died there later that night while undergoing surgery.

His 50-year-old sister Diana, also of Livermore, suffered minor injuries. She was taken to Eden Hospital and was released later that day.

Apostol suffered only minor injuries in the crash but died from his heart condition at Valley Care Hospital on May 26.

Police said speed or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
