A water main break this morning on Van Ness Avenue at Broadway in San Francisco have left customers in the area without water service, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission said.
The break was reported around 3:30 a.m., spokeswoman Christina Kerby said.
She said in order to repair the main, crews had to shut off water in the area. As of about 6 a.m., there was no water service on east Van Ness Avenue from Pacific Avenue to Vallejo Street. Kerby expected water service to be restored in a few hours.
Crews shut down all three lanes in the northbound direction, Kerby said. Traffic is being diverted eastbound onto Broadway and San Francisco Municipal Railway buses are being rerouted as well.
She expected the roadway to be closed for about four hours.
Kerby said the 8-inch water main was ruptured due to an old pipe.
San Francisco firefighters and police also responded to assist.
