Firefighters responded to a broken gas line this afternoon at a San Jose elementary school that briefly caused a shelter-in-place warning to be issued for surrounding neighborhoods, a fire captain said.

Construction crews at Lyndale Elementary School ruptured a three-inch gas line at about 1:25 p.m., fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said.

PG&E crews crimped the gas line to stop the flow of gas and had it under control at 3:11 p.m., Rangel said.

They will shut off the gas and replace the pipe, he said.

Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods were briefly told to shelter in place, but that warning has since been lifted, Rangel said.

No one was harmed during the incident.

The school, located at 13901 Nordyke Drive, was empty and did not require evacuation, Rangel said.

A hazardous materials team assisted in the response.
