One lane on NB Van Ness Avenue open

One lane of northbound Van Ness Avenue at Broadway in San Francisco reopened around 7 a.m. after a water main break blocked lanes this morning, a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokeswoman said.

The break was reported around 3:30 a.m., spokeswoman Christina Kerby said.

To repair the main crews had to shut down all three lanes in the northbound direction.

Kerby said traffic was slow and advised drivers to use alternate routes.

Traffic is being diverted eastbound onto Broadway and San Francisco Municipal Railway buses are being rerouted as well.

She expected the roadway to be closed for about four hours.

Water service has not been interrupted, Kerby said, however some businesses and apartment buildings might experience interruption or low pressure later.

Kerby said the 8-inch water main was ruptured due to an old pipe.

San Francisco firefighters and police also assisted.
